On May 28th, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $1,000,000 in 2014 EPA Brownfields Assessment and Cleanup Grants for five West Virginia communities.  Assessment grants provide funding to communities to inventory, characterize, assess, and conduct planning and community involvement on brownfield sites, while Cleanup grants provide funding for environmental remediation on brownfields.

Four Assessment Grants were awarded to West Virginia communities totaling $800,000:
  • The City of Morgantown, a $200,000 recipient, will use their assessment funds to perform up to 10 Phase I and five Phase II environmental site assessments as well as to review cleanup strategies and support community engagement activities.
  • The City of Thomas, a $200,000 recipient, will use their assessment funds to conduct up to up to seven Phase I and up to four Phase II environmental site assessments. The funds will also be used to prepare up to five cleanup plans.
  • The Wayne County Economic Development Authority, a $200,000 recipient, will use their assessment funds to conduct up to 15 Phase I and four Phase II environmental site assessments in addition to hosting workshops to promote outreach to the community.
  • The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, a $200,000 recipient, will use their assessment funds to perform up to eight Phase I and five Phase II environmental site assessments focusing on Nicholas, Fayette, and Raleigh Counties.
One Cleanup Grant was awarded for brownfield remediation totaling $200,000:
  • The Wyoming County Economic Development Authority, a $200,000 recipient, will use their cleanup funds for the remediation of the former Lusk Lumber property, now referred to as the Barkers Creek Industrial Park. The site’s soil is contaminated with heavy metals and petroleum.
